Men talk of the Negro problem. There is no Negro problem. The problem is whether the American people have honesty enough, loyalty enough, honor enough, patriotism enough to live up to their own Constitution

-- Frederick Douglass, August 1893

A lot of commentary about what is going on with this or that racist comment has distracted attention for what irrefutable acts of racism have actually taken place in this country. The circle of [color] blinder than thou rhetoric has become rather shameful.

So I have decided to take us back in time a few decades, at the prompting of the Visible Darkness blog and attempt to bring to mind where we've been, in light of the fact that nobody seems capable of asking any serious questions about what 'obvious' racism really has done in this country.

So can I ask a simple question? Do Americans believe that our criminal justice system is not in need of some serious inspection? This is a good place to start evaluating whether or not we are as civilized as we might think.
