In 1979, voters in Berkeley California
passed the Berkley Marijuana Law (BMC Chapter 12.24) to assure that
there would be no arrestor citations for marijuana law violations.
Again in 1996, 85% of Berkley voters supported marijuana, with the
passage of the Compassionate Use Act (Heath and Safety Code 1362.5)
This Law makes cannabis legal for seriously ill Californians with
the permission of their physician.
Yet, despite the will of the citizens
and the historic votes which made these laws, neither of these laws
has been enacted in the city of Berkley. In fact , there have been
nearly 300 arrests in the past year. three times the number from the
previous year. This, combined with a doubling in the number of
citations issued for misdemeanor possession makes it especially
pressing to immediately implement these two laws.
By signing below, I indicate my
support for the Berkley Marijuana Law of 1979 and the Compassionate
Use Act of 1996. In order to enable these laws within the city, I
urge the City Council to pass the Kinder And Safer Streets Act of
1999
Further, I hereby permit the Berkley
Cannabis Ordinance Oversight League to use my name in any
appropriate venue to promote the Kinder and Safer Streets Act and to
advocate for its passage.
