I like your choices of Malcolm X and Do The Right Thing (haven't seen

To Sleep With Anger so I can't comment), but I strongly have to disagree

with Straight Out of Brooklyn-- I thought it was one of the worst

directed, poorly acted pieces of crap I've seen for some time!

You gotta catch To Sleep With Anger...  Dan Glover is tremendous

and the contrast of generations is well done.

To me, the poor directing/acting was the appeal.  No slicked-

By black films, do mean those directed by black directors, or those that

Well, I don't know about "best" but here are a couple of goodies:

In The Heat of The Night

A Raisin In The Sun  -- with Sidney Poitier

A movie that I haven't seen in years, and one that doesn't even turn up

as the 3 AM TV movie, is "Island In The Sun" with Harry Belafonte and

Dorothy Dandridge.  (Ms. Dandridge was nominated for the Best Actress

Academy Award for her role in Carmen Jones.)  It was a very daring movie

in its day and I would love to see it again.

One of the top 10 Black films of all time, now being released in home

Two Thumbs Up. I enjoyed it back in the 1960's and I just found out about

its release, and, if you're interested, E-Mail Authority1 and I'll let

anyone know when and where to get theirs.  The soundtrack features Stevie

Wonder, Martha and the Vandellas, The Miracles, Mary Wells and The

Marvelettes. I remember this as being one of the primary performances of

If you wanna see a funky movie, see Water Melon Man.  It's about

a white man you lives a "normal" life until he wakes up one morning

as a Black man.  It's funny and makes you think.  It was made by Mario Van

Peeples father in the early 70's late 60's.

Oh and saw the premire of D.R.O.P. Squad the other day.  It was

for the national Black Arts Festival.  It was produced by Spike Lee,

and it's Director did a SLAMMING job.  It comes out in October.  It's

about a Black Ad Executive who pretty much sells out.  So his sister

asks for Help from the D.R.O.P. Squad.  D.R.O.P. stands for Deprogramming

and Restoration of Pride.  It wasn't a total comedy, but wasn't total

drama either.  It hit hard and made it's points.

Another older Sidney Poitier film I saw (and have somewhere on tape) is

called something like "God, The Devil, xxx", and I know that this is

wrong, but it is an excellent film in which Poitier plays a miner caught

underground during a nuclear-type holocaust.  He ends up in NYC and the

only other person there is a bigoted white woman (can't remember who

plays her.)  Very stark and bleak movie, reflects the fear of nuclear

war that was pervasive in the 50s and early 60s and hits racism head

on.

Another movie of interest, not necessarily a "Black Movie" but definitely

worth seeing is an English movie from the late 50s called "Saphire" about

a murdered woman who had been "passing" as white and how racism was the

cause of her death.  Another very bleak movie, with a lot of interesting

scenes of how blacks lived in London at the time.

Finally, what about "The Harder They Come?"  I realize it is not in the

same category with some of the others, but it is one of the best music

movies ever made and it introduced reggae into the US.  It's available

on tape although the cheap Jamaican print the tape is made from is

a little sorry, but this story of a young singer (played by Jimmy

Cliff) trying to become a hero is worth seeing.

I was not impressed by Christopher Williams's acting debut either.  Although,

I would not consider M2 Society as an "all time" best black movie, I did think

that it was a good movie.  I didn't see it as exploitation because this is the

reality of many people (unfortunately).  I thought that it just showed things

as they are (which I admit are a bit harsh).

Some of my favorite films were definitely exploitation films.  That's why I

haven't listed any.  However, I do think that "Imitation of Life" was definitely

one of the best.

You are referring to "The World, The Flesh and the Devil" and it starred

Harry Belafonte, Mel Ferrer and Inger Stevens.

My list is short because most of the good ones have already been taken.

But I like......

            STORMY WEATHER

1945, 20th Century-Fox, with Lena Horne, Bill Robinson, Dooley Wilson,

Fats Waller, Cab Calloway and man others.  There's also that great Black

comedy team (whose name escapes me at the moment) who used to have a

conversation, but neither one would let the other one finish the

sentence, so you didn't know what they were talking about!  But *they*

knew what they were talkibng about, and it was hilarious.  I've seen

their routine copied by white comedians in later films.

I disagree. Menace II Society is a very well directed Urban horror movie,

all the more terrifying because the events depicted  really could and often

do happen. Furthermore it did not suffer from the typical Hollywood

feelgood ending.

 Now New Jack City

 >was good.  Unfortunately it spawned all these wanabees.

 >

I didn't say it wasn't good. I said it was nothing special. A few good

performances (Wesley Snipes was phenomenal, and Chris Rock and Allen Payne

provided good supporting performances), but the characters were fairly

underdeveloped (and besides I hated Ice-T's performance, though it was

passable). Also it was a movie which was pretty much done in by its

excessive preachiness.

If you think M2S is a NJC wannabee I suggest you go see the two movies

again.

 >     Besides, didn't you just love Christopher Williams' performance in NJC?

You forgot the smiley. I think Christophe Williams' performance in NJC had

to be one of the worst I've ever seen, bar none. You were joking, right?

here's a question for jill. what was the name of euzhan palcy's other movie.

not dry white season but the girl coming of age in the cane... never mind.

'sugar cane alley'. i would say that this movie is just as good as sankofa.

i saw parts of 'wide sargasso sea' and it reminded me of sugar cane alley.

any comparisons?
