Anybody with a mind capable of understanding race can be racist. The only
way that someone cannot be racist is if they don't understand race. That does not imply
that everyone that understands race is racist. Nor does it mean that everyone who
aids racism is aware that they do. And it certainly doesn't mean that everyone
who doesn't like racism is a credible anti-racist.
First of all understand that racism is like any other ideology, you really don't know where your own personal opinions lie until you have heard the 'party line' as it were. So I haved layed down frameworks for understanding what racism is and how it operates and then you can individually see for yourself. As regards skin privileges, you can tell how heavily invested you are in the racist status quo of American social life to the degree you exercise (consciously or unconsciously) those privileges granted to you by virtue of your skin color. Simply because you are a part of this social fabric doesn't make you an irredeemable 'part of the problem', but awareness of how much of your social weight is individual vs. racial is an important first step for the race man. |
These tests are pretty weak, but very interesting. (Ed.)
