The Meme of Seven

Seven things to do before I die.

Sail the Chesapeake Bay, South Pacific and Intercoastal Waterway.
Write at least one novel.
Play my favorite Thelonius Monk songs on piano
Bounce grandchildren in my huge house on Thanksgiving
Drive >175 MPH
Master one martial art.
Buy a Breitling Montbrilliant.

Seven things I cannot do.

Listen to Glide by Pleasure without bobbing my head
Watch Million Dollar Baby without tears
Ride a wheelie for more than 30 feet
Understand my Ex
Tear myself away from this damned computer
Stay out of a good fight
Suffer through chick flicks.

Seven things that attract me to my best friend

His utter lack of pretense
His barbecue legacy
Our mutual bald black heads

His algorithms.

Ahh. Another reason to respect Cobb. He also adores John McPhee.

Spy Game is one of my favorite films too. Redford's character was an amazing spy.

Okay, I've been talkin' to Bijan and he hipped me a little bit, maybe you can help too.

Man, I do not understand what the devil Monk is doing. Bijan explained it as "impressionism." That helped a lot. You got anything to add?

As for me, I'm more in that Tatum-Peterson line. Of course, that means my chances for replicating what they do are just about nil.

Monk, more than any composer I know, deals with the spaces in between notes and expected harmonies. When you listen to him, he makes your mind fill in the blanks and then he puts in the phrasing that you can't expect.

It's hard to understand how he does it until you hear him render a song that's familiar. That's why I highly recommend his version of 'Just a Gigolo' from the Straight No Chaser DVD.

What's amazing about him is how some of his stuff is so simple it almost sounds like he doesn't know what he's doing. We could go on.. I'll bring this subject to the top in a new post.
