I've always felt uncomfortable calling [insert darkie here; default shabba ranks] "ugly." What, exactly, is the standard(s)? Can you trust them?
Whoopi doesn't do it for me either, but "ugly" still seems harsh to me. I could live with homely -- i think those looks are at least partly why she got her role in The Color Purple. She old, heavy, and wider now, but she did look a lot better in her youth (in an around-the-way-girl kind of way).

crap, those links above don't work so good. you can try this, but you can google up yer own young-whoopi shots. not as painful as it sounds.

Once I lived down the street from a costume / Halloween shop. They had a full size mannequin of Whoopi in her Sister Act garb with a rediculously large smile on her face. It wasn't meant to be scary, but her expression sure frightened me enough to leave a lasting memory in my mind.
