Popery
What if Terri Schiavo were the Pope?
At this late moment I still can't get over two facts. The first is the tragic persistence of the Schindler clan. The second is how many ordinarily reasonable people have been tweaked by this triviality. There really hasn't been anything like it since Chandra Levy. Now might be a good time to listen to more interesting chatter, like that of AQ.
Symbolically, Mrs. Schiavo has something in common with the Pope. They're not over until they're over, and everyone is watching. But what if the Pope himself were stricken with precisely the same medical condition as Schiavo? Could a brain damaged Pope be removed from office? Does the Pope have a DNR order? hmmm.

I've argued on some other blogs and wd be interested in your opinion. I think Schiavo is the latest in a series of prominent celebrity 'victims' whose only reason for outcry is that they are a white females- think Nicole Simpson, JonBenet Ramsey, Laci Peterson, etc. If they were black or Asian or Hispanic, or even poor whites from urban areas or Appalachia they'd be a single day story on page 47, and bloggers and the Right Wing Nuts wdn't give a damn. She fits the profile. However, I am unfortunately learning new things about this mess every day, and apparently the Schindlers weren't as crafty and familiar with legal representation as I originally thought. This suggests that ther probably not as rich as I assumed.
That doesn't change the fact that Schiavo has been made a herioc victim by a machine that is driven by the same appetites that fuel gossip magazines.
Yes, I believe that what the masses of Americans who buy into this stuff is lacks the imagination to empathizes with non-whites in the exact same way. I don't know what to make of all that, because quite frankly I wouldn't want the attention.
I'm not going to talk about wingnuts or moonbats, because anything anybody says about them is probably true and therefore not really worth considering. When your Republican boss starts hovering around your desk because he thinks you're pro-choice, then maybe it's time to worry. But I don't think most Americans take this stuff that seriously.
