Yeah But..

The NYT Reports:

NASA plans to try to set a world speed record for jets on Monday with the flight of a pilotless vehicle that culminates a decades-long research program into hypersonic flight.

The craft, the X-43A, is powered by a rocket booster dropped from a modified B-52 bomber. In a short dash above the Pacific, it is to use its experimental scramjet engine, which is expected to push the craft to almost 7,000 miles an hour, or 10 times the speed of sound.

Yes but this aircraft is only as big as a kayak.

You are missing the point. Let me remind you that the Wrights built their early gliders based on "established" science, text and formulae to establish the size and shape of hardware. When it didn't work, they began to investigate the body of work the world regarded as science, and they did it by inventing the (relatively small) wind tunnel. With it, they rewrote all the texts based on experimental data - real science!

Armed with this knowledge, they built a successful glider (1902) and a powered plane (1903).
