Gateway + MicroCenter
Gateway is finally showing evidence of brains. They are going to sell their machines in a new deal with MicroCenter. MicroCenter is by far the best retailer of software and software related books in the country. They are most definitely a destination. Gateway has been making mediocre consumer PCs for a long time and completely missed the mark with their cow-flavored retail chain.
I don't know how it can happen, but I am hopeful that this can result in more MicroCenter stores. I may still end up going to Fry's for the prices, but I do miss MicroCenter - which is a much smarter store with far better people. Come to LA, please.

We don't have Fry's here in Atlanta (though there is a rumor we may soon be getting one), but we have 2 MicroCenters. It is indeed a wonderful store. Personally, I was shocked at how knowledgeable their staff is. And, at least for the ATL, they have damn good prices.

you know that there is a microcenter in Tustin, right? That is going to be the closest to you for now.

Although there's a Fry's in my neck of the woods, I do miss MicroCenter.

Ahhh, I spoke too soon; grand opening of Fry's in the Northern ATL 'burbs on Saturday. So everyone, what's the big deal with Fry's?

I must have spent 3000 bucks at the MicroCenter in Marrietta on Powers Ferry. Damn!
Fry's basically the Costco of the computer world. They have everything (from Refrigerators, to oscilloscopes) and they have it cheap. Their stores are enormous and sometimes they even have a cafe. They are the brick and mortar for Outpost.com too.
On the downside, their staff are just generic retail knuckleheads except a few guys in the microprocessor department (yes you can buy motherboards and components almost as cheaply as online), and their lines are horrendous. There's no way to get in and get out of that joint in just a few minutes.
If you know exactly what you want Fry's can be a very good place to shop, but they cannot approach the book department and service of MicroCenter.

You're familar with the Microcenter on Power's Ferry in Marietta (which the locals pronounce May-Retta, btw)? Spend (or spent) a lot of time down here Cobb?

I used to live at Wildwood over near Powers Ferry and Windy Hill. Cobb County! I was in Atlanta from January 95 through the end of 97. It was living in Newt Gingrich's district that helped me understand that white Republican Southerners were not evil incarnate.

I used to love MicroCenter. I used to go out there just to swivel my head and fantasize sometimes.
