Soldiers Die - So What?

Swerdloff reminds us that this kind of war we're experiencing in Iraq is nothing like the ancient wars. Specifically the war on Iraq bears no resemblance to the Peloponnesian War. Iraq lost, and they unlike Sparta, are never going to take over the attacker's capital. What's killing Americans is obesity.

This gives me yet another comfort in my willful ignorance of current Iraqi events. As I said before, the interesting part is over. It is now reduced to the level of Intifada, hardly military. So it's not surprising that the neocon policy wonks are suggesting a series of operations with cool names in the service of counterinsurgency.

Our problem was with Afghanistan and Al-Queada, not the whole Middle East! This Imperial venture constructed by Republican Social-Democrats benefits Likud and the House of Saud and that slime-ball in Pakistan. Now we have American taxes funding Socialist in Israel, Egypt and Iraq. This is becoming a bigger social welfare program this country has ever seen and the most expensive failed assassination attempt in military history!

Before I read all those references, I'll simply say that the American public makes for poor Imperial citizens. That does not change what our power and influence compels us to do as a superpower.

I believe that, as expensive as it may be, a democratic and friendly Iraq will become as important to us as Poland. It will also moderate our need for Israel and Saudi Arabia. We cannot afford to allow the Middle East to devolve into the kind of chaos, and if that means violating the divine rights of kings, er sovereign claims of dictators, then in is truly the destiny of democracy.

Civil Wars are good for the soul. We should stand out of the way. the more we mess with it the more it's gonna bleed.

Really, we are only protecting those who would do us more harm. The house of Saud and Pakistan are only festering and that is where the real disease is.
